Children's Day

June 1 is Children's day in China. If I remember correctly, it was
sponsored by Zhou En-Lai and his wife, who were beloved in China. They
had no children of their own, so they were said to be parents to all
Chinese children.

Though this day is particularly poignant as a new parent of a Chinese
child, I spent much of the day filling out forms for the U.S.
Consulate. Our leader led twelve of us through them line by line. It
was rather taxing for me. Since I worked in an immigration law firm,
and I'm also familiar with things like distinguishing Chinese first
and last names, I could have gone through it much more quickly. The
good news is that they are finished.

We have passed the halfway point of our trip - yesterday actually.
Since we have to stay in Guanghou for so long it at least affords us
the opportunity to get into a routine. We plan to do some sightseeing
on our own, as I don't think I can walk inside a tour bus for a while.

Pan Pan's routine includes two naps a day - should be one, but she
tends to wake up early and then need a morning nap. I usually put her
down because Davis is too strongly associated with horsing around.
Then there are four bottles of milk and rice powder. And then some
other foods at our meals. Though she is small, she is an avid eater.

She's also a jokester. Likes to play silly games and laugh. This
reminds us of Olive and brings us joy. And it is definitely a fine
tribute to her granddad and namesake. Some of you wrote about his old
"can you sit still?" game, and I had already tried it on her, but
she's not quite old enough.

She is progressing very fast, however. Today she started trying to walk.
